Sam: A Trailblazer in Educational Leadership and Social Advocacy

Hailing from Detroit, MI, Sam's journey is a compelling tale of resilience, dedication, and transformative leadership. As the 12th child in a family of 14, Sam's early experiences in a bustling household set the stage for his deep understanding of community and personal development.

Sam's academic path is a striking example of turning challenges into triumphs. After leaving high school early and attending community college, he embarked on an educational odyssey that led him to Central Michigan University (FireUp Chips!), where he completed his bachelor's degree. His pursuit of higher education continued at Fordham University (Go Rams!), earning a master's degree, and finishing a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy from California State University, Northridge (Go Matadors!).

With a career spanning nearly 14 years in higher education, primarily in Housing & Residential Education, Sam has honed his expertise in fostering student success within residential communities. His work emphasizes the critical growth and development that occur at the intersection of living and learning environments.

In his recent role at California State University, Los Angeles, Sam managed the campus's SB-85 Basic Needs Initiatives, addressing crucial issues like housing and food insecurity and overseeing Emergency Needs Grants. He provided comprehensive support to students, including health & wellness, academic guidance, and emotional assistance.

In December 2018, Sam founded Los Angeles Room & Board, a non-profit dedicated to eradicating college student hunger and homelessness, ensuring successful college completion. Remarkably, at the height of the pandemic in September 2020, Sam opened the first home for college students experiencing homelessness and hunger. Starting with just 15 students, LA Room & Board has now expanded to 4 locations across Los Angeles, offering 190 beds to students in need.

Beyond his direct work with students, Sam serves as a beacon of advocacy and social change. He was appointed as a Los Angeles County Commissioner to the Commission on Children and Families, where he co-chairs the committee on Transition Age Youth and Homelessness. Additionally, Sam co-chairs Social Justice Partners Los Angeles, focusing on fostering social change across the city.

A man of many passions, Sam enjoys exploring new cultures through travel, spending quality time with family and friends, and immersing himself in the vibrant world of live music.

Sam's story is more than just a narrative of educational achievement; it's a testament to his relentless drive to create a better world for students and communities, making him a true vanguard in the field of higher education and social justice.
